They Stood Their Ground
The Little Bighorn Battle between Col. Custer's 7th
Cavalry and the combined might of the Sioux and
Cheyenne has long been one of western history's most
written about subjects. The batle continues to intrigue
young and old alike and will do so for generations to
come.
Although known as "Custer's Last Stand" most of the
twelve companies of the 7th Cavalry survived. Custer
and five companies were decimated in the battle, but
not all together. There were small knots of men that
put up a valiant "last stand" throughout the five mile
battleield.
The painting depicts a lone cavalryman, standing over a
fallen comrade, awaiting the inevitable. With his
carbine in one hand and a revolver in the other, he
knows there is no tommorrow, and with resolve, stands
his ground.
