El Lobo Rojo
In all the wolf family, one species truly endangered is
the red wolf. Having once roamed throughout the forests
and bayous of the South and southern United States,
today the red wolf can be found only in Louisiana and
the eastern part of Texas. The Fish and Game
Departments concede that there are probably no more
than eight purebred red wolves outside of captivity.
This is a far cry from their populations of the late
19th and early 20th centuries.
Unlike their counterparts of the North, red wolves look
more like coyotes; long noses, pointed ears, and much
lighter in weight than the better known Timber Wolf. As
our population increases, their habitat decreases,
consequently, so does their number.
The painting depicts a lone red wolf deep in the
forest, poised, alert, and ready to move at the
slightest provocation.
