Elephants at Kariba
Of all the animals in Africa, the elephant is one of
the most imposing. A gregarious animal, the elephant
ranges throughout most of southern Africa. In reality,
they are not an endangered species, as many people
believe. In fact, there are so many elephants in
Botswana, that they are destroying the habitat and many
starve to death.
Hunted for their ivory over the past century, many of
the truly big tuskers are gone. But hunting is not the
problem...poaching is!. Losses to poaching are awesome
and the waste intolerable. A truly magnificent
creature, the elephant, will survive if properly
managed, controlled and protected through comprehensive
wildlife programs.
The painting depicts a group of elephants near Lake
Kariba in Zimbabwe, South Africa. The artist spent
considerable time observing, sketching and
photographing these magnificent animals during a
memorable trip in 1991.
