Death of a Legend
One of the most controversial
aspects of the fight at the Alamo on March 6th, 1836,
is the death of one of the key defenders, namely David
Crockett. How he died, where he died, and when he died,
have been open to debate for several past generations.
There are several different theories concerning his
death and they, like the battle itself, have been
hashed over for decades and probably will for decades
to come.
According to Susannah Dickerson, an eye witness, she
stated she saw Crockett in front of his
assigned position, the area in front of the chapel. She
made mention of the "peculiar" hat next to the body.
This probably refers to Davey's coonskin cap.
Regardless of how any of the accounts of Crockett's
death may be accepted or rejected, one aspect will
always remain - the mystique of it all. Maybe that is
how it should remain.
The painting depicts David Crockett's final moments in
the area in front of the chapel, the area mentioned by
Susannah Dickerson. Santa Anna's troops are pressing in
and the end is near.
