Destiny
On Sunday, June 25, 1876, Lt. Col. George Armstrong
Custer and five companies of the U.S. Seventh Cavalry
were decimated at the Battle of the Little Bighorn by
the combined might of the Sioux and Cheyenne. Sitting
Bull, acknowledged spiritual leader of all the Sioux
tribes, had predicted such a victory for the Sioux and
Cheyenne.
Custer's defeat was a shock to the Eastern populace and
although it was a tremendous victory for the Sioux and
Cheyenne, it proved to also be their ultimate defeat,
for it marked the beginning of the end for their nomadic
way of life.
The painting depicts the Last Stand area of the Little
Bighorn Battlefield as it exists today, with portraits
of figures of the different factions involved
superimposed across the sky. In the center are the
Cavalry, Sioux, and Cheyenne led by Custer and Crazy
Horse. They are riding together, for regardless of
one's politics in life, in death, we are all together.
