A Good Omen
A very spiritual and mystical people, the Plains Indians of the 1870's believed strongly in "omens", so
to speak. Whether friend or foe, Sioux, Cheyenne, or
Crow, to name a few, all those that followed the
buffalo culture believed strongly in "The Great Spirit"
and acted accordingly.
The painting depicts an active Crow encampment in
Montana Territory during the 1870's. A young boy
attends the horses, there is movement in the camp, and
the sentinel on the hill raises his coup stick and
lance to "Besha", the buffalo apparition in the clouds,
this is indeed, "A Good Omen."
